50/30/20 Budget Benchmarks by Income

The 50/30/20 rule — 50% of income to needs, 30% to wants, 20% to savings — is simple until you ask what it means in dollars on your salary. We computed the exact monthly targets for five incomes from $40,000 to $150,000. On $75,000, the rule gives you $3,125 for needs, $1,875 for wants, and $1,250 for savings every month.

Key findings

  • On $40,000, 20% savings is $667/month — modest, but it compounds to real money if automated.
  • The 'save' column is the one to protect: lifestyle creep almost always eats wants first, savings second.
  • High earners don't get a pass — $150,000 still only saves $2,500/month under the rule.
  • These are gross-income figures; run the rule on take-home pay for the stricter, more useful version.

Methodology

  • Annual gross income ÷ 12 = monthly gross; split 50/30/20 and rounded to the nearest dollar.
  • Computed October 2026. The classic rule technically applies to after-tax income — these gross-based figures are the starting benchmark; your take-home targets will be proportionally smaller.
  • Housing-heavy budgets may need 60/20/20 or similar variants; the rule is a starting point, not a law.
