Emergency Fund Targets by Monthly Spending

'Three to six months of expenses' is the standard advice — but what is that in dollars for you? We computed the 3- and 6-month targets for five monthly spending levels, plus the build time at a $500 monthly savings rate. At $5,000 in monthly essentials, the full 6-month fund is $30,000 — a five-year project at $500 a month, which is exactly why the starter buffer comes first.

Key findings

  • A $5,000/month household needs $15,000 for 3 months and $30,000 for 6 — most people underestimate both.
  • At $500/month saved, the 3-month target takes 15–48 months depending on spending level.
  • The gap between 3 and 6 months is where income stability decides: stable income, 3; variable, 6.
  • Build time is the argument for starting now — every month of delay is a month without the buffer.

Methodology

  • Monthly essential spending × 3 and × 6. 'Essentials' means housing, food, transport, insurance, and minimum debt payments — not total spending.
  • Build time = 3-month target ÷ $500/month, rounded to whole months, assuming no interest.
  • Computed October 2026. Earn interest on the fund in a high-yield savings account while building it.
